Congress has capacity to revive itself: Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee on Friday spoke about various issues after stepping down as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017. Speaking during an interview with India Today, Mukherjee said, “India is a developing economy. Every government at every point of time will have to face some kind of challenge. Today governance itself is a big challenge. In complex situations, new technology always brings disruption and the government needs to adjust itself with that disruption.” Further in his conversation, he also spoke about the challenges the current government is facing. He said, “Problems are there no doubt. If there has been economic growth or higher desired level of economic growth its natural that there will be problems and sufferings.”

When asked about the current situation Congress party is in at the moment, Mukherjee said, “I have hopes that Congress will reinvent itself. The Congress as a party has the capacity to rework on its problem and revive itself.”

“Congress is not confined to one section, it is a mass party,” he said adding that the party faced many problems during different phases but they bounced back. When asked about his experience with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and PM Narendra Modi, he said, “I and PM Modi knew how to manage disagreements and how to keeps things to ourselves.”

With a political career spanning over six decades, Mukherjee served as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017.

Congress President SoniaFormer President Pranab Mukherjee, Congress President Sonia Gandhi replied that Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be elevated to the top post in the not too distant a future. According to Sonia, the move will be done soon. A number of state units of Congress, as well as top leaders, have been clamoring for Rahul to be appointed new president in place of Sonia as soon as possible. However, Rahul himself has been reticent about his plans although this week he did indicate his willingness to take up the job.

However, Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as party chief will depend on the Congress Working Committee meeting and it will then have to set the date for the election, but for the poll to take place, another rival to the post will have to be named.
